The Penguins were in a bind with so many defensemen who needed to clear waivers to be sent to the American Hockey League, and they have lost one.
Brian Strait has been claimed by the New York Islanders. Strait was put on waivers Thursday and would have been assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL if he had cleared.
It's too bad. Strait has potential as a defensive defenseman.
The Penguins took that risk after deciding to keep defenseman Simon Despres on their 23-man roster. The 2009 first-round pick does not require waivers.
