Forbes, which covers everything financial, says the Penguins are worth $288 million, which ranks ninth in the NHL, just behind the Flyers and just ahead of the Kings. It also lists Penguins center Sidney Crosby as the highest-paid NHL player in combined earnings, which it says includes $4 million in endorsements.
Its annual survey says the Penguins had an operating income of $9.1 million -- which seems highly successful to us for a team that made a first-round exit.
It says the Toronto Maple Leafs are worth $1 billion, the first time an NHL team has reached that value.
The publication said, "The Penguins have proven that it is possible for a small-market NHL franchise to consistently be a playoff team and make money given the right arena deal and smart management."
Keep in mind that these teams and athletes are not forthcoming with Forbes, so these values are estimates.
