Friday, June 16, 1972
PITTSBURGH - A 1st inning RBI by Willie Stargell and a 3rd inning RBI by Manny Sanguillen was all Steve Blass needed to nail down a complete game victory and a 2-1 Pirates win.
Roberto Clemente was 1-3 with an intentional walk. He singled in the 3rd and scored on Sanguillen's 25th RBI of the year. Sanguillen was 2-4.
Clemente is now 56 hits away from 3,000.
Blass, now 8-1, had a shutout until the top of the 9th when Darrell Thomas led off with a single and scored on Nate Colbert's 2 out double. Fred Norman (4-6) took the loss.
The win kept the Pirates in 1st place in the NL East with a record of 35-18. The Mets beat the Reds 2-1, so the Bucs remain 1/2 games ahead. Game 2 with the Padres is Saturday with Clay Kirby (4-6) facing Luke Walker (2-2).
In memory of Mr. Les Banos.
