BRADENTON, Fla. — Since shortly after Clint Hurdle joined the Pirates -- at least -- the team has been interested in Jerry Sands.

“I know one of the coaches that’s worked out with him the last couple winters raves about the kid,” Hurdle said. “We’re happy to have him.”

The Pirates had trade discussions with the Dodgers in 2011 and Pirates scouts liked Sands then, Hurdle said. In today’s Post-Gazette: Sands’ path from a 25th-rounder to the Pirates by way of the Red Sox and where he could fit with the team.

Sands has work ahead of him to make the roster, especially with all the options at corner outfield and first base. So far there is no clarity to the bench, except that Gaby Sanchez and Michael McKenry will be on it along with someone who can play shortstop.

We will chat today at noon before the Pirates take on the Orioles at McKechnie Field. You can reach the chat room by scrolling across “Chats” at the top of the page and clicking on “Bill Brink.”
