BRADENTON, Fla. -- Here are some notes about Friday's intrasquad game.
***Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon each pitched two scoreless innings. Cole allowed one hit and struck out one, and Taillion allowed two hits and struck out three. Clint Hurdle was impressed with the way Cole and Taillon varied their release times yet kept a quick pace.
"Many times when runners were on base we were able to give various looks, different reads, hold the ball," Hurdle said. "Those guys in particular ... they were able to hold the ball and change their release times."
Neither Cole nor Taillon read too much into a two-inning stint in a scrimmage in late February, or the fact that the whole major league staff and most of the Pirates' baseball operations staff.
"That never crossed my mind, honestly," Taillon said.
***Starling Marte hit a long two-run home run over the new bleachers in left-center field. Brandon Inge doubled and Ivan DeJesus Jr. tripled.
