BRADENTON, Fla. -- In today's Post-Gazette: The two front-runners for the last opening in the rotation.
Also, video of Charlie Morton Wednesday, courtesy of the Pirates.
Jeff Locke and Kyle McPherson are friends and have lockers next to each other in the Pirate City clubhouse. They have played together in the minors for a couple seasons as well as briefly in the majors last year.
There are other possibilities for the spot. Jonathan Sanchez is the most likely. Jeanmar Gomez, Justin Wilson, Chris Leroux and Andy Oliver are all options. It appears, from what the Pirates have said during the winter, that Locke and McPherson have the inside track.
Clint Hurdle cautioned against making too much of their stats or performance in spring training games due to the uncertain nature of the competition. Instead, the Pirates will look at how well the pitchers hit their spots and execute their pitches.
The spot may only be temporary until Francisco Liriano returns from his broken arm, but the Pirates understand the need to avoid falling behind in the standings early. McPherson and Locke have both performed well in the majors but both have struggled as well. Locke needs to reduce his home runs allowed, and McPherson needs to pitch deeper into his starts (granted, he only made three).
