This list covers the relevant Pirates players who must be protected from the Dec. 6 Rule 5 draft. After four years in professional ball, or five if a player signed while he was 18 or younger, his team must add him to the 40-man roster or risk losing him to another team in the Rule 5 draft. Other teams can select a player for $50,000 but they must keep him on their roster or waive him. If he clears waivers, the team must offer him back to his original club for $25,000. If another team claims him off waivers, the Rule 5 stipulations also apply to that new team. Teams can also work out trades that allow the club that selected the player to keep him, but send him to the minor leagues.

If the player spends less than 90 days on the active roster due to injury – let’s call this the Gustavo Nunez corollary – he must remain on active roster the following season until he earns 90 days of service time.

Tony Sanchez will be protected. Vic Black, Kyle Kaminska, Ramon Cabrera and Nathan Baker are also possibilities. When considering who to add, Neal Huntington has said the Pirates pay attention to who other teams may select as well as who they want to retain, so the best players in the Pirates’ eyes may not be the same players they add to the roster. The Pirates have six empty spots on the 40-man roster.
