Q: Who do you see as being dropped from the 40-man roster and who do you see as being put on there? For instance, will [Matt] Hague be dropped?

Lee

A: Hague is a possibility. The Pirates may see him as someone they can get through waivers if they want to keep him in the organization. Rick van den Hurk and Yamaico Navarro are also possibilities, and they may try to do with Chad Beck what they did with Ali Solis and get him through waivers to add minor league depth. They may remove one of their infielders if they think they can get him through waivers.

It seems more likely that the Pirates will not tender Jeff Karstens a contract, considering he made $3.1 million in 2012 and missed much of the season due to two different injuries. It is less likely, but still possible, that they non-tender Charlie Morton, who is rehabilititating from Tommy John surgery. Morton made $2.445 million in 2012.

They will add Tony Sanchez to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, and probably Vic Black as well. Kyle Kaminska is a possibility.
