Tuesday, June 27, 1972
NEW YORK – Jim Fregosi’s 3 run homer off Bob Miller in the 7th, broke a 4-4 tie and allowed the Mets to sweep the 2 game series against the Bucs 7-4.
Roberto Clemente did not play. He is day-to-day with a stomach virus and needs 50 hits to reach 3,000.
Down 2-0 in the 2nd, Richie Hebner tied the game with a 2 run shot, his 8th HR. In the 6th, Al Oliver drove in his 49th run of the season to make it 4-2, Pirates.
The Mets tied it in the 6th. Jerry Grote had an RBI single. Milt May’s passed ball allowed Ted Martinez to score, tying the game at 4-4 and setting the stage for Fregosi’s 7th inning heroics.
The Mets are now just 1 game behind the Pirates in the NL East. The Cubs split a DH against the Cards and are 3.5 GB.
The Bucs return home for a 2 game series against the Expos. Wednesday, it’s Bill Stoneman (6-5) v Steve Blass (9-1).
In memory of Mr. Les Banos.
