-The Bengals placed wide receiver Mohamed Sanu (foot) on injured reserve.

-The Patriots placed wide receiver Julian Edelman (foot) on injured reserve.

-The Texans signed former Chiefs cornerback Stanford Routt.

-The Dolphins placed offensive lineman Jake Long (triceps) on injured reserve.

-Packers running back James Starks is expected to miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury.

-The Lions placed wide receiver Titus Young (knee) on injured reserve.

-The Seahawks placed guard James Carpenter (foot) on injured reserve and waived wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

-A hamstring injury could sideline Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher for several weeks.

-The Cardinals released tight end Todd Heap.

Penguins/NHL

-Sidney Crosby and Ron Burkle spearhead progress in meetings between the NHL and NHLPA last night.

-Crosby and Craig Adams were among the 18 players who represented the NHLPA.

-Burkle and Mario Lemieux have had talks with Crosby and his agent, Pat Brisson, in the past few weeks on how to resolve the lockout.

-Lemieux and CEO David Morehouse are expected to attend a board of governors meeting in New York.

-“In some ways I’d say it might be the best day we’ve had, which isn’t too overly optimistic of a picture — there’s still a lot of work to do and a lot to be done." - NHL special counsel Steve Fehr.

-Forwards J.T. Miller, Vince Trocheck, Riley Barber and goaltender John Gibson, all local players, were chosen for the United States' selection camp for the upcoming World Junior Championships.

College Basketball

-The City Game rivalry between Duquesne and Pitt isn't what it used to be.

-No. 3 Missouri got 20 points from Trey Burke in a 73-41 rout of Western Michigan.

-Wayne Blackshear scored 18 points for No. 5 Louisville in an 80-38 trouncing of College of Charleston.

-Nick Johnson scored 23 points for No. 8 Arizona which beat Southern Miss, 63-55.

-Laurence Bowers had 26 points for No. 12 Missouri which defeated Southeast Missouri State, 81-65.

-No. 13 Illinois got 13 points from D.J. Richardson in a 72-64 win against Western Carolina.

-Andre Hollins had 22 points for No. 14 Minnesota in an 88-64 win against South Dakota State.

-Otto Porter scored 14 points for No. 15 Georgetown which beat Texas, 64-41.

-Anthony Bennett had 18 points for No. 21 UNLV which defeated Portland, 68-60.

-No. 25 North Carolina State got 13 points from Richard Howell in a 69-65 win against Connecticut.

College Football

-Paul Chryst moves to shoot down any rumors connecting him with a return to Wisconsin.

-The Wisconsin job became open after Bret Bielema bolted to take the Arkansas gig.

-Boston College hired former Temple coach Steve Addazio.

-Auburn hired former Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn.

-Darrell Hazell leaves Kent State to become Purdue's head coach.

Pirates/MLB

-How much will television revenue infuence offseason moves?

-The Giants re-signed second baseman Marco Scutaro to a thee-year deal worth $20 million.

-The Rockies acquired pitcher Wilton Lopez from the Astros in exchange for pitching prospects Alex White and Alex Gillingham.

-The Nationals agreed to terms with former Angels pitcher Dan Haren.

-The Rays acquired shortstop Yunel Escobar from the Marlins in exchange for infield prospect Derek Dietrich.

-The Rangers signed former Royals pitcher Joakim Soria to a two-year contract.

-The Red Sox signed former Dodgers outfielder Shane Victorino to a three-year deal worth $39 million.
