Pirates/MLB

-A.J. Burnett (above) throws a one-hitter as the Pirates beat the Cubs, 5-0.

-Highlights:

-The Pirates acquired first baseman Gaby Sanchez and pitcher Kyle Kaminskafrom the Marlins in exchange for outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and a conditional draft pick.

-If nothing else, the Pirates are tougher. Sanchez once did this to former Pirates outfielder Nyjer Morgan:

-The Pirates acquired pitcher Chad Quallls from the Yankees in exchange for first infielder Casey McGehee.

-The Pirates will keep all their new players past 2012.

-The minor league report.

-The Reds acquired pitcher Jonathan Broxton from the Royals in exchange for pitchers J.C. Sulbaran and Donnie Joseph.

-Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is dealing with a leg injury.

-The Giants acquired outfielder Hunter Pence (right) from the Phillies in exchange for outfielder Nate Schierholtz, catcher Tommy Joseph and pitcher Seth Rosin.

-The Dodgers acquired outfielder Shane Victorino from the Phillies in exchange for pitchers Josh Lindblom, Ethan Martin and future considerations.

-The Rangers acquired pitcher Ryan Dempster from the Cubs in exchange for third baseman Christian Villanueva and pitcher Kyle Hendricks.

-The Rangers acquired catcher Geovany Soto from the Cubs in exchange for pitcher Jake Brigham.

Steelers/NFL

-The Steelers' offense is beginning to round into shape.

-Ryan Mundy. Political junkie.

-A position change turned former Pitt linebacker Chris Doleman into a hall-of-famer.

-The Bengals signed head coach and former Steelers assistant Marvin Lewis to a contract extension through 2014.

-The Titans signed wide receiver Kendall Wright, their first-round pick, to a four-year contract worth $8.2 million.

-The Jets are expected to cut ties with former Pitt tackle Jeff Otah.

-The Seahawks signed former 49ers wide receiver Braylon Edwards to a one-year contract.

-Giants safety Tyler Sash was suspended four games for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing drug policy.

College Football

-Penn State running back Silas Redd (right) transfers to USC.

-Pitt doesn't want to be a lame duck in its final Big East season.

-The Big East is trying to re-invent itself once again.

Penguins/NHL

-The Sabres re-signed restricted free agent forward to a three-year deal worth a total of $3.825 million.

-“You see players at 40 and 40-plus like (Jaromir) Jagr and (Teemu) Selanne, and maybe it’s a new trend that’s starting, that if you look after yourself and take care of yourself, you can play. Who knows what the limit is?" - Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson on his decision to not retire.
