-Despite a late homerun by Pedro Alvarez, the Pirates fall to the Rockies, 5-4, in nine innings.

Highlights:

-Clint Hurdle feels at home in Colorado.

-The Pirates activated Alex Presley from the disabled list.

-The minor league report.

-Reds first baseman Joey Votto will be sidelined three to four weeks due to a knee injury.

-Blue Jays third baseman and former Pirate Jose Bautista suffered a left wrist injury.

Penguins/NHL

-The Penguins re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Brian Strait (right) to a one-year two-way contract. Strait, 24, appeared in nine NHL games last season and recorded one assist. In 41 AHL games last season, he scored 16 points (four goals, 12 assists). He was a third-round pick in 2006.

-The Penguins have extended an offer to unrestricted free agent forward Shane Doan.

-The Capitals re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Mike Green to a three-year contract worth a total of $18.25 million.

-Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec was convicted drunk driving following a automobile accident in his native Czech Republic.

Steelers/NFL

-The Steelers are the 21st most valuable franchise in professional sports.

-"He's not going to sugarcoat anything. He's going to try to correct you and make you the best you can be. If you're a veteran guy, you've got to understand that and take the good with the bad. I appreciate that. I can handle that. I'm glad he's here." - Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne on new offensive coordinator and former Steelers assistant Bruce Arians.

-The Ravens re-signed running back Ray Rice (right) to a five-year contract worth $40 million.

-The Browns signed second-round supplemental draft pick wide receiver Josh Gordon to a four-year contract worth $5.3 million.

-The Jaguars re-signed kicker Josh Scobee to a four-year contract worth $13.8 million.

-The Bears re-signed running back Matt Forte to a four-year contract worth a total of $32 million.

-Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

-Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryan was arrested on a family violence charge.

Etc.

-Penn State's Paternoville has been renamed Nittanyville.

-The Paterno family isn't crazy about the Freeh Report.

-The Washington Wild Things are struggling at the gate.
