Penguins/NHL

-A goal by Simon Despres in the second overtime gave the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 3-2 win against the St. John's IceCaps in Game 5 of their Calder Cup Eastern Conference semifinal series. Ben Street recorded two assists for the Penguins while teammate Brad Thiessen made 26 saves. St. John's has a 3-2 series lead. Game 6 is scheduled Friday, 6 p.m. in St. John's.

-Highlights:

-"Biggest goal of my career, definitely.” - Despres.

-Former Penguins defenseman Gordie Roberts was hired as the head coach of the Elk River High School boys team in Minnesota.

-An assist by Evgeni Malkin helped Russia shut out Germany, 2-0 in the IIHF World Championships.

-A goal and an assist by Ily Kovalchuk led the Devils to a series-clinching 3-1 win against the rival Flyers in Game 5. Adam Henrique recorded two assists for New Jersey while teammate Martin Brodeur made 27 saves. New  Jersey won the series, 4-1.

-New Jersey's David Clarkson was given credit for this goal after Philadelphia goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov accidently played a puck into his legs:

-"I had no idea it was in until the crowd starts booing. Pretty good feeling when it went in." - Clarkson on the goal.

-"I think what was tough on them was us not retaliating to any of the stuff they were doing and all the stuff they were saying every single game. Guys just turned away and didn’t respond to anybody. They were able to get Pittsburgh all wrapped up in that stuff. It must’ve gotten tough on them a little bit to just talk to themselves all day long.” - Brodeur on his team's discipline.

-“I love everyone on this team. That was probably the most enjoyable year I’ve ever had. I’ve won some Cups, I’ve won some trophies, but I loved this year. From the organization to the last player on the team, and the fans, they were so nice to me. I hate to finish it right now; that’s the worst feeling. You finish the whole story, the whole year, that’s a sad day today for me…I wanna cry right now.” - Flyers forward and former Penguin Jaromir Jagr.
