PITTSBURGH - Jose Pagan's error allowed Bobby Bonds to score an unearned run in a 2 run 3rd inning to push the Giants to a 3-1 win over the Pirates.
Coupled with the Mets' 8-3 win at Atlanta, the Bucs are back in 2nd place, just 1/2 games behind New York.
Roberto Clemente was 1-4 and needs 59 hits to reach 3,000. In the 4th, Clemente reached 1st on a Tito Fuentes error. He moved to 2nd on Manny Sanguillen's RBI single, moved to 3rd on Pagan's sac bunt, but was stranded. Clemente led off the 6th with a single but was out when Sanguillen lined into a double play. Sanguillen now has 23 RBIs.
Sam McDowell (7-4) got the complete game win. Dock Ellis (5-3) took the loss.
Thursday's double header will have Steve Stone (3-6) vs Nelson Briles (3-1) in Game 1. Ron Bryant (3-3) vs Bob Moose (4-2) in Game 2.
In memory of Mr. Les Banos.
