Pitt fans attending the Syracuse game Saturday afternoon are being encouraged to wear gold as part of the school’s gold out promotion. Gold “This is Our House” T-shirts will be given away for the nationally televised game on ESPN.
Pitt coach Jamie Dixon is lukewarm to the idea of promotional events at his basketball games if only because he feels Pitt’s fans don’t need encouragement.
“The sold out arena, the waiting list, the number of fans that show up in November and December in middle of the week games, it’s not normal,” Dixon said. “Our fans been terrific. We’ve done [Gold Outs] a few times before. Our crowds have been so good that oftentimes the promotion we do is often secondary to the crowd we already have.”
This is the third time the athletic department has done such a promotion. There was one last year for a game against West Virginia and another one in 2010 for the Big East opener against Connecticut.
Junior forward Lamar Patterson is looking forward to the atmosphere the fans will provide for the game.
“The Oakland Zoo, it’s like they’re on the court with us,” Patterson said. “They make the game better. I’m sure the game is sold out. It will be a crazy game.”
