Today’s 11:00 a.m. tip at Rutgers is not the earliest start time for Pitt.

In the 2005 NCAA tournament, Pitt and Pacific played a first-round game at 10:40 a.m. And as well all know that did not turn out well for the Panthers. Pacific won that game, 79-71, in Boise, Idaho.

That trip was a disaster from the outset. The team’s charter plane was delayed with mechanical problems and the team did not land in Boise until 1 a.m. the day before the game.

It’s a much shorter trip to Piscataway, N.J. Pitt has won at Rutgers the past six times it has played at the RAC.

At least Pitt will be accustomed to playing an early game. The Panthers opened the season Monday with a noon game against Cincinnati. The Panthers started that game well and led 34-26 at halftime before falling apart in the second half and losing, 70-61.

The Panthers had better get used to playing early games. They have five more noon starts the rest of the season, including next Saturday’s home game against Marquette.
