Pitt is expected to release a statement today on Trey Zeigler, the junior guard who was cited for driving under the influence on Sunday.
Pitt coach Jamie Dixon became known as somewhat of a disciplinarian last season when he suspended a couple of players early in the season. Lamar Patterson was suspended for two games and Cameron Wright for one. Those were for violation of team rules.
Zeigler’s case is different because he is alleged to have run afoul of the law.
The last time I can remember a Pitt player getting into trouble with the law was Levance Fields. That situation appeared much worse when the police report came out. But in the end, all Fields had to do was go through an ARD program for first-time offenders.
Fields did not miss any games and his discipline was kept within the team.
We should find out soon about Zeigler’s status. Will Dixon keep with his recent decisions and suspend Zeigler? Or, will he wait until more facts come out?
One thing is for sure, the Panthers are equipped to handle a suspension if it comes to that. Dixon has a deep roster and has been playing a 10-man rotation. Plus, the upcoming schedule is soft. Seven games remain before the start of the Big East schedule and the Panthers are not expected to be tested in any of the games.
