Pitt senior point guard Tray Woodall was asked after practice today whether he paid attention to any of the things that have been written about the team during the preseason. He paused and then mentioned how the coaches placed a copy of CBS’ rankings for the top 50 point guards in his locker.
Woodall was ranked as the No. 36 point guard on the list.
“The coaches put something in our lockers about having me as the 30-something point guard and having us in the middle of the pack,” Woodall said. “I don’t read into it too much. We just have to go out and play. It was Jeff Goodman who came out with something, a point guard ranking. I’m not in high school anymore. They were cool back in the day. [Rankings] don't matter now.”
The rankings were compiled by the CBS college basketball staff, which includes Goodman, Matt Norlander, Jeff Borzello and Gary Parrish.
Players from schools such as Montana, Drexel and Nevada were ranked ahead of Woodall, who is coming an injury-plagued junior season in which he averaged 11.7 points and 6.1 assists per game.
Norlander wrote this about Woodall: “An average defender, Woodall loves to get out and run on O. It makes for an interesting change of pace with Pitt's game. Thanks to frosh big man Steven Adams creating a dynamic for the Panthers, Woodall's set up to have a very nice year.”
Dixon seemed to be more put off by the rankings.
“That article, the writer won’t be showing that around to people,” Dixon said. “I’m sure that won’t be passed around at a dinner party he has later in the year. They throw some guys together, new guys evolve. It’s always amazing how guys emerge whether they move to a different position or just get an opportunity. Things change dramatically. I’m always amazed they put it up there [online], but then they never seem to keep it up later in the year for obvious reasons.”
The article is still up on cbssports.com.
