Wondering why Hawaii-Hilo is traveling thousands of miles for a couple of exhibition games against Pitt and Duquesne this weekend? As is usually the case in these preseason games, there is a connection between the coaches. In this case, there is a connection between the coaches and the universities.
Hawaii-Hilo’s coach is Jeff Law, the son of former Pitt assistant Norm Law, who coached at Pitt from 1986-94 as an assistant to Paul Evans.
Jeff is in his 15th season at Hawaii-Hilo, which will play Pitt Friday night and Duquesne Sunday night.
In addition to his dad’s connection at Pitt, Jeff shares the same coaching tree as Pitt coach Jamie Dixon. Both coached under Riley Wallace at the University of Hawaii. Dixon coached there from 1992-94 and Law coached there for eight years after Dixon.
Jeff played for his dad SUNY-Plattsburgh. He then went to Hobart College, Hawaii, Santa Monica College and Los Angeles City College before being named the head coach at Hawaii-Hilo.
Hawaii-Hilo is a Division II school that competes in the Pac West Conference. Law is 203-167 in his career with the Vulcans.
