Pitt coach Jamie Dixon received his first verbal commitment for the class of 2013 Saturday night when McKeesport native Mike Young let him know he would become a Panther.

Young, a 6-foot-8 power forward, attended Shady Side Academy for his freshman season, but transferred to St. Benedict’s in New Jersey for his sophomore season. He attended Hudson Catholic last season and will transfer back to St. Benedict’s for his senior season.

Young is ranked as the No. 102 recruit for the 2013 class by Rivals.com. He averaged 15.9 points and 11.6 rebounds per game for Hudson Catholic last season.

Young also played AAU in New Jersy for the Playaz. He is good friends with former Shaler standout Geno Thorpe.

I can only assume that Mr Young attended several different high schools in his search for the best possible academic program to suit his interests.

Broader question for the editor of the College Sports page of PPG+. Why do Penn State Football and Pitt Basketball get their own pages, but no page is established for Pitt Football? Do Pitt Football fans go elsewhere for their insights as to events in the Pitt Football program? Let me know, and I will go elsewhere if need be, to get my Pitt Football news and comments.

The Pitt football blog is free on the Post-Gazette web site. It's called Redshirt Diaries.
