Pitt coach Jamie Dixon received some big news before the holiday weekend got underway. Transfer Trey Zeigler has been ruled eligible to play immeidately by the NCAA.
When Zeigler transferred from Central Michigan to Pitt last month, Pitt applied for a waiver for Zeigler because his father, Ernie, was fired as the head coach at Central Michigan. Under most circumstances, transfers must sit out one season under NCAA rules after transferring schools.
Getting Zedigler in the fold is huge for the Panthers, who were desperately seeking some stabilitty in the backcourt. Dixon had point guard Tray Woodall returning, but his younger guards were inconsistent last season. Zeigler gives the team stability, versatility and most important scoring punch.
He will be the starting shooting guard next to Woodall. With Lamar Patterson at small forward and Talib Zanna and Steven Adams in the frontcourt, the Panthers have the sudden look of a Big East contender.
Without Zeigler, I had the Panthers pegged for middle of the pack in the Big East, anywhere from 8th-12th. I'll amdend that now and anoint them a top-five team in the conference.
