John Marinatto's rocky tenure as commissioner of the Big East ended Monday morning when he resigned his post, effective immediately.
Joseph A. Bailey, a former CEO of the Miami Dolphins, is the new interim commissioner.
Marinatto was viewed as a reactice rather than proactive commissioner in the wake of Pitt and Syracuse leaving the league for the ACC and West Virginia for the Big 12.
Marinatto reaplced those schools with Temple, Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, SMU and Central Florida.
The announcement comes two weeks before the Big East's annual spring meetings in Florida, where the league's administrators and coaches discuss future business. The biggest piece of business on the table for the conference is a new TV rights deal that will be negotiated in the fall.
At first blush, this move seems to be directed toward getting someone in place with more knowledge of the television landscape.
