The short answer to that is no one really knows except for the coaching staff. It probably won't be entirely apparent until Saturday, even for the running backs themselves.
Mike Zordich put it this way: Penn State's offense changes so much based on the opponent. That's one reason why Zordich barely ran the ball against Ohio State but, along with Zach Zwinak, got the bulk of carries against Purdue.
Bill Belton, of course, had one play that game and no carries. Coach Bill O'Brien, not so subtly, said the guys who practice the best will play, hinting that Belton may have had a forgettable week of practice. So that could clearly factor into what we see on Saturday.
In fact, that's the only clear thing about this. Practice matters for this position.
"That will be a competition every week," O'Brien said. "Zach has done a really good job for us for the most part, he's a tough kid, he's big, he breaks tackles, he can catch the ball well, he's smart. "So he will always be in the competition, but that will be a competition every week with all those guys, Billy Belton, Zordich, Derek Day, all those guys. That will be a practice competition every week."
