For never being affiliated with the same team, Michael Mauti and Urban Meyer have crossed paths many times.
It started when Mauti was in high school. Before he committed to Penn State, he visited Florida and liked the school and coach so much that his father, Rich Mauti, said he thought his son would attend there.
Obviously, that didn't happen. Mauti has said he wanted to be the best linebacker he could be and thought Penn State's Linebacker U was the best place to make his goal happen.
Last year, when Meyer was out of coaching, he worked for ESPN and did a story on Mauti. Judging from comments he made at his press conference earlier this week, Meyer has been glad to have known Mauti.
"He's a tough guy," Meyer said. "He's a leader. Love his family. He's playing his tail off after his knee injury."
The feeling of respect is mutual.
"I know he's one of the better coaches in the country," Mauti said.
