At least Jim Delany knew the Big 10's hopes for the status quo would pretty much count for nothing. Earlier this month, on a conference call, he and Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman said the Big 10 preferred the current system. It second choice was the plus-one system. Neither is going to happen.

College football will officially have a four-team playoff starting in 2014.

"This is the package that was put forth and we will strongly support it," Perlman said to the AP.

Historically, this kind of system would be great for Penn State. Though the Nittany Lions have not finished in the top five at the end of season in a while (No. 6 at the end of 2008 and played in the Rose Bowl), all of those times getting neglected by the middle and southern parts of the country in the 60s and 70s in the final rankings wouldn't have happened with a playoff.
