Tuesday, April 25, 1972
PITTSBURGH - Roberto Clemente went 0-5 but led off the top of the 13th inning with a walk by his former teammate Joe Gibbon. He and Manny Sanguillen scored when Richie Hebner won the game with a two out, three run homer to give the Pirates a 5-2 victory over the Reds.
Clemente still needs 110 hits to reach 3,000.
The Pirates led 2-1 in the top of the 4th when Johnny Bench took starter Bob Johnson for a solo homer, his first of the season. The game remained tied until Hebner's game winning clout, his 2nd of the year.
Bob Miller (1-1) won in relief. Jim McGlothen (0-2) took the loss.
Game 2 of the 3 game series will have Gary Nolan face Steve Blass.
