Until last Saturday, I’d never wandered into Edgewood. What a charming community! Lots of interesting, busy bistros—many with sidewalk seating – and plenty of foot traffic happily ambulating along tidy South Braddock Avenue (SBA). The area is easily accessible: I exited the Squirrel Hill Tunnel heading toward Monroeville; took the first exit and kept veering left as the ramp bifurcated several times. Voila! The ramp terminated at SBA, and after turning right, I arrived at my destination – the Regent Square Theater (RST) – moments later. RST is owned by the Pittsburgh Filmmakers and seats 300 patrons in air-conditioned comfort. My wife and I sat, as we always do, in the last row. (Last row for me, because I don’t have to endure seat kneeing; in-my-ear jawboning, and, worst of all, clouds of infected mucous droplets sprayed on my dorsal side by a half-dead contagion carrier. By show time, the venue was packed with an older, well-behaved, and well-heeled audience. Just one disheveled bum (Oui, c’est moi!). Now for a succinct review:

So... what happens when a player in a game all of a sudden can't do what seems natural to them which would be to play the game? They do the same stuff with the same motions and with the same thoughts as last week when they were king of the world and how their end of the dance turns out totally differently? Instead of that nice forehand cross court put away, I end up with a shot that is out by 6 inches. That is a very disconcerting moment, let me tell you, and you start fishing for answers.

First: The funniest scene, when I caught Crazy, Stupid, Love (CSL), occurred after the movie ended. And I’m not alluding to an “outtake” during the movie’s closing credits. Nope, it was a free-range loony moment in the theater’s lobby. My demented Mom went to the restroom, and when she finally emerged, she strolled through the crowded lobby (lots of cash-strapped families there to see The Smurfs, because on Tuesdays popcorn and soft drinks cost but a buck) carrying a roll of toilet paper, which she then handed to me. I put it in the men’s bathroom, and quickly headed for the exit. Well, as quickly as a guy with a broken toe with an old mother in tow could go. When this “magical moment” occurred, I didn’t think it amusing. But upon hearing about it, my wife laughed so hard some of her crow’s feet popped out and flew away. Now for my succinct and in no way sarcastic CSL review:

In Todays PG there's a letter to the editor from Marty McCabe from Avalon about images that he found very disturbing recently. He finds the photo's of starving children in Kenya to be tragic, and most of us would share that response. He questions why we need to see that...( how else would we know that this horrible situation even exists? ) while he also thinks it should have been on page one instead of a photo of U2. The next part of his letter is the real killer. " No one needs to see images of starving people, obese people, overweight children, cigarette or pot smokers, alcohol drinkers, women who breast feed and same sex couples etc." Wow what a tolerant man we have in MrMcCabe ! He goes on to say that we all know what "these people" look like, and accuses the PG of simply trying to embellish their reporting. Mr McCabe wants GOOD NEWS ! He winds up by saying that the paper and news media ought to focus on people who don't indulge in the aforementioned "vices". He longs for stories about the people who are doing "great things"...as long as they're well fed....but in shape...non smokers,,,,non drinkers...not breast feeding and heterosexual. My goodness, Mr. McCabe sounds like a really wonderful chap with an open mind and heart. Wouldn't the world be great if we were all just like him.
