Ten long, bloody, wasted years of war.

This week marks the tenth anniversary of the war in Afghanistan. We still have 90,000 troops there, we've had 4,000 of soldiers dies there, and about 18,000 seriously wounded. I heard the big wig general last evening that we will be there for "a long time". My question is ..Why?. We heard over and over again that we'd leave Iraq when we were able to turn the government security over to the Iraqis...and now we hear the same thing about Afghanistan.
The majority of Americans think we've had more than enough of Afghanistan. The Russians gave up after ten years....and I think it's time for us. Didn't we go there to avenge those who attacked us on 9-11 and to apprehend Bin Laden? ( although the majority of the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia ). We also were supposed to be there because the Afghans gave safe harbor to the Taliban. It looks to me as if the Taliban isn't going anywhere, and that most people in that God forsaken country will support anybody who helps them simply survive.
I think that the folks on Wall Street have an interest in maintaining the status quo, and the people who manufacture drugs want to maintain their lucrative businesses....and the "generals on the ground" want to keep fighting wars.....that's what they do for a living. Unfortunately the 4000 young men and women who have suffered and died over there will never have a chance to do anything more.
Is this never ending disgusting war making you and yours any safer? I kinda doubt that the next attack is being planned in a cave in Afghanistan

That's why Afghanistan is often called the "Graveyard of Empires."

RNM44, I heard Sy Hersh lecture at the Carnegie. He said that the Saudis have been arming the Sunni's in Iraq-- billions have been committed to this. His assessment was that Iraq will devolve into a bloody civil war. Mission accomplished, eh?

MM, I am glad to see that a presidential hopeful that you voted for who promised to end that has actually escalated the fighting in Afgan. makes you sick.

This puts you in a position of not being political any longer. Do you ever believe another word he says and if so how considering how strong you are against this situation.

I am totally one hundred percent against the president's policy with Iraq and Afghanistan. I am disappointed and feel very let down. It does indeed make me sick.

RNM44, where do you think we would be if McCain/Palin had been elected? Doubled down in Iraq and Afghanistan? Launching strikes against Iran?

Please don't misunderstand my feelings about the president...I still support him and would vote for him in a minute over anyone else I can think of. I just disagree with him about the wars.
We'd have already bombed Iran if those two knuckleheads had won,

Yes. I agree RNM. There is no intellectual honesty on the other side. I'm thoroughly disappointed as is my Army veteran husband who feels he hired the president to do a job. Gitmo isn't closed. The wars continue to what end we're not sure. Drone attacks will come back to us in hatred squared.

*t is a very weak argument in defense of a liar by substituting another person who does not have the authority doing what you know they would do when in fact you have no idea what they would do.

In the end what you have said is you support a liar and as long as his lies agree with you it is fine.

This initial post is a legit discussion which stands on its own. Deciding to alter the discussion to include other variables out side of the original discussion to defend or transfer the topic is not legit.

Some day another discussion could be held to include world wide comparisons if so be it, but not tonight.

The original posts discussion is centered on an individual who has no intellectual honesty as the both of you admit.

I choose to not support anyone with out intellectual honesty. I will stick to the evidence and not rely on future speculations.

So if I now get to add my own addition to the discussion, knowing the topic of your discussion is a liar how do you believe anything released about the killing and body disposal of Osama?

Very poor on my part to not distinguish what was said to whom, sorry about that.

I know the both of you are superior enough in brain power to figure it out.

RNM, to be fair, President Obama promised to wind down the war in Iraq and to focus our military effort on finishing the job in Afghanistan.

This via CNN in July 2008--
Obama calls situation in Afghanistan 'urgent'
Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday that United States needs to focus on Afghanistan in its battle against terrorism.

"The Afghan government needs to do more. But we have to understand that the situation is precarious and urgent here in Afghanistan. And I believe this has to be our central focus, the central front, on our battle against terrorism," Obama said Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation."

"I think one of the biggest mistakes we've made strategically after 9/11 was to fail to finish the job here, focus our attention here. We got distracted by Iraq," he said.

And this from the Council of Foreign Relations :
Obama says Iraq is not and "never was" the main front of the war on terror. Obama has called for a greater counterterrorism focus on Afghanistan and the tribal region of Pakistan.

So as you not think I opine from one side, I will do the accusation myself. The only thing Bush did that I liked a lot was to sign the repeal of partial birth abortion.

That is as horrendous a crime as ever there was. If you support anyone who ever supported that then I think you need to read beyond the supreme courts very strong warning to reading its decision and read it.

I applaud Rick Santorem for leading the fight.
