NEW YORK – Jim Fregosi’s 3 run homer off Bob Miller in the 7th, broke a 4-4 tie and allowed the Mets to sweep the 2 game series against the Bucs 7-4.

Roberto Clemente did not play. He is day-to-day with a stomach virus and needs 50 hits to reach 3,000.

Down 2-0 in the 2nd, Richie Hebner tied the game with a 2 run shot, his 8th HR. In the 6th, Al Oliver drove in his 49th run of the season to make it 4-2, Pirates.

The Mets tied it in the 6th. Jerry Grote had an RBI single. Milt May’s passed ball allowed Ted Martinez to score, tying the game at 4-4 and setting the stage for Fregosi’s 7th inning heroics.

The Mets are now just 1 game behind the Pirates in the NL East. The Cubs split a DH against the Cards and are 3.5 GB.

The Bucs return home for a 2 game series against the Expos. Wednesday, it’s Bill Stoneman (6-5) v Steve Blass (9-1).

21-3K CLEMENTE'S 3,000 HITS PIRATES DOUBLE UP CUBS 4-2
CLEMENTE 1-3, RBI - 52 HITS FROM 3K

CHICAGO - The Pirates began their road trip by stopping the Cubs 4-2. Chicago, who have been advancing in the standings, are still in 3rd place but now 3 games behind the first place Pirates.  The Bucs gain 1/2 game on the Mets, whose game in New York against St.Louis was rained out. The Mets are now 1/2 game behind.

Roberto Clemente was 1-3 with a walk and a RBI. He is now 52 hits from 3,000. In the 4th inning, Clemente's triple drove in Dave Cash and Vic Davalillo. Al Oliver's triple  drove in Clemente to make it 3-0.
The Cubs came back to make it 3-2. Manny Sanguillen drove in Willie Stargell to give the Pirates an insurance run in the 8th.

Steve Blass (9-1) is the winner with Dave Guisti getting his 8th save. Fergie Jenkins (8-6) took the loss.

Saturday, it's Nelson Briles (4-2) v Bill Hands (6-2).

21-3K CLEMENTE'S 3,000 HITS DODGERS SNEAK BY BUCS IN 10, 5-3

PITTSBURGH - An unearned run on a Jose Pagan error allowed the Dodgers to tie the ballgame in the 7th. A pinch hit single by Jim Lefebvre in the 10th off Dave Guisti gave LA a 5-3 win over the Pirates.
Roberto Clemente was 0-3 and is still 53 hits away from 3,000.
An error by Willie Stargell also allowed an unearned run in a 2 run 1st inning. The Bucs tied it in the 2nd on Bob Robertson's 2 run HR, his 3rd of the year. In the 3rd, Stargell gave the Bucs a 3-2 lead when he drove in Al Oliver.

Jim Brewer (5-2) got the win in relief in relief of Claude Osteen. Hard luck loser Bob Moose (5-3) pitched 9.1 innings, striking out 7.

The loss puts the Pirates in a virtual tie with NY for 1st place in the NL East. NY beat the Astros 5-4. The Cubs lost to SF 4-0 and remain 2 GB.

The Pirates travel to Chicago. Friday, it's Steve Blass (8-1) v Fergie Jenkins (8-5).

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates - Dodgers game was rained out Tuesday. No make up date has been made.
Tuesday's scheduled starters, Claude Osteen and Bob Moose, will pitch Wednesday.
Houston's 7-4 win over New York has placed the Mets a full game behind the 1st place Buccos. Chicago's 15-8 rout over the Giants puts them just 2 games behind the Pirates.

CLEMENTE 3-5, HR, 3 RBIS - 53 HITS FROM 3K
Monday, June 19, 1972

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates, shut out by San Diego in 2 straight games, took it out on Don Sutton and the Dodgers. Four multi-run innings led the Bucs to a 13-3 win over LA, even though the Bucs had just 3 more hits (16) than the Dodgers.
Roberto Clemente was 3-5 and needs 53 hits to reach 3,000. He doubled in both the 3rd and the 5th, when he drove in Dave Cash. His HR in the 8th drove in Vic Davalillo. Clemente is now batting .325 with 5 HR and 30 RBIs.

Manny Sanguillen was 2-5 with 2 RBIs. Al Oliver was 3-4 with a HR and 3 RBIs. Gene Alley took Sutton deep in the 6th for his 1st HR of the year.  Two of the Pirates' runs were unearned.
Sutton (8-2) got the loss. Dock Ellis (8-2) pitched 7.1 innings for the win.
The Pirates are still in 1st place, 1/2 game ahead of the Mets, who lost to Houston. The Cubs, with an 11 inning win over SF, have moved to within 2.5 games of first.

Tuesday, its Claude Osteen vs Bob Moose.

21-3K CLEMENTE'S 3,000 HITS PADRES SHUTOUT PIRATES AGAIN 1-0

Sunday, June 18, 1972

PITTSBURGH - Once again, Padres pitching held the Bucs to another shutout. Steve Arlin (6-6) followed Clay Kirby's lead and threw a complete game shutout win . The Padres sneaked past the Pirates, 1-0.
Roberto Clemente was 0-4 and is still 56 hits away from 3,000.

The Pirates are now 1/2 game behind the Mets, who beat the Reds 2-1.
Bruce Kison (2-1) scattered just 3 hits for the Pirates. The lone run came in the top of the 1st. Jerry Morales led off the game with a double. He advanced to 3rd on Fred Stanley's ground out and scored on Leron Lee's groundout.
The Pirates came close to tying the game in the 8th. Richie Hebner led off with a single. After Milt May forced Hebner at 2nd, Gene Clines came in to pinch run and moved to 2nd when Gene Alley walked. Manny Sanguillen pinch hit for Kison. Clines advanced to 3rd on Sangy's line out but was stranded when Vic Davalillo popped up to 3B Dave Roberts in foul territory.
LA comes to town Monday with Don Sutton (8-1) facing Dock Ellis (5-3).

21-3K CLEMENTE'S 3,000 HITS BUCS SNEAK PAST PADRES, 2-1
CLEMENTE 1-3, 56 HITS FROM 3K

PITTSBURGH - A 1st inning RBI by Willie Stargell and a 3rd inning RBI by Manny Sanguillen was all Steve Blass needed to nail down a complete game victory and a 2-1 Pirates win.
Roberto Clemente was 1-3 with an intentional walk. He singled in the 3rd and scored on Sanguillen's 25th RBI of the year. Sanguillen was 2-4.
Clemente is now 56 hits away from 3,000. 
Blass, now 8-1, had a shutout until the top of the 9th when Darrell Thomas led off with a single and scored on Nate Colbert's 2 out double. Fred Norman (4-6) took the loss.
The win kept the Pirates in 1st place in the NL East with a record of 35-18. The Mets beat the Reds 2-1, so the Bucs remain 1/2 games ahead. Game 2 with the Padres is Saturday with Clay Kirby (4-6) facing Luke Walker (2-2).

CLEMENTE 2-5 IN G2, 57 HITS FROM 3K
Thursday, June 15, 1972

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates moved into 1st place in the NL East when they swept the double header against the Giants. The Bucs took the first game 4-1 and the nightcap 9-7. The Mets were idle.

Roberto Clemente, rested in Game 1, was 2-5 with a first inning RBI in Game 2. He drove in Dave Cash in a 3 run Pirates 1st inning. Clemente is now 57 hits away from 3,000.

Al Oliver hit a 2 run homer in the 5th for his 4th HR of the year. Scoop now has 40 RBIs.
In Game 1, Willie Stargell was 3-4 with an RBI, his 45th. His triple scored Oliver in the 5th. Stargell would score on a sac fly from Bob Robertson.
Nelson Briles (4-2) beat Steve Stone (3-7) in Game 1. Dave Guisti earned his 7th save. In Game 2, Bob Moose (5-2) bested Ron Bryant (3-4). Ramon Hernandez got his 4th save.
Friday vs the Padres, it's Fred Norman (4-5) v Steve Blass (7-1).
