CHICAGO – Manny Sanguillen broke a 1-1 tie when he drove in both Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell with a single in the 8th to give the Bucs a 3-1 win over the Cubs.
The Bucs gain a game on 2nd place New York who were shut out by the Cards at Shea, 11-0. Pittsburgh leads the Mets in the NL East by 1.5 games and the Cubs by 4 games.
Clemente, who was on base in the 8th when he forced Vic Davalillo out at 2nd base, was 0-4. He is still 52 hits away from 3,000.
The Cubs grabbed the lead in the 6th on Glenn Beckert’s RBI single. Al Oliver tied the game in the 7th with a solo homer, his 6th, and his 45th RBI. Sangy now has 30 RBI’s.
Nelson Briles (5-2) is the winner. Dave Guisti got his 9th save. Bill Hands (6-3) took the loss.
Sunday’s game will have Dock Ellis (6-3) facing Burt Hooton (6-4).
